The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have placed right-handed pitcher Phil Hughes and right-handed pitcher Trevor May on the 15-day disabled list. Hughes, who has a left-knee contusion, was struck with a line drive in the ninth inning last night vs. the Miami Marlins. May will be placed on the disabled list with low back spasms.
To replace Hughes and May on the 25-man roster, the Twins have returned from rehab assignment and reinstated right-handed pitcher Kyle Gibson from the 15-day disabled list and have recalled right-handed pitcher J.T. Chargois from Triple-A Rochester.
Gibson missed 42 games with a right shoulder strain. He made three rehab assignment starts, two with Single-A Ft. Myers and one with Triple-A Rochester. He posted a combined 1.17 ERA (15.1 IP, 2 ER) with 10 strikeouts and four walks.
Chargois (pronounced shag-wa), who will be looking to make his major league debut, appeared in 11 games for the Red Wings, posting a 0.73 ERA (12.1 IP, 1 ER) with 20 strikeouts, four walks and four saves. The 25-year-old started the season at Double-A Chattanooga appearing in 11 games posting a 1.54 ERA (11.2 IP, 2 ER) with seven saves before being promoted to Rochester on May 10th.
Over parts of five minor league seasons, he has a 2.05 ERA (88.0 IP, 20 ER) with 109 strikeouts, converting 31 saves in 31 opportunities. The Louisiana native was selected by the Twins in the second round (72nd overall) of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Rice University. Chargois, who will wear uniform number 60, is expected to join the team tonight vs. the Boston Red Sox.
