College Football Weekend Recap: Nobody Looks Like a No.1 Team

Plenty happened this weekend in college football, as more turnover took place at the top of the rankings. The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs and No. 3 Notre Dame Fighting Irish fell while No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide nearly slipped up. Who was great, who stunk and what went down?

This is your weekend recap.

Gophers Recap

The Minnesota Golden Gophers wrecked the Nebraska Cornhuskers 54-21 at TCF Bank Stadium for their fifth win of the season. Gophers quarterback Demry Croft did his best Vince Young impression, rushing for 183 yards and three touchdowns. The Gophers defense racked up three sacks and stopped the Cornhuskers on five fourth-and-short attempts. For an in-depth recap on the Gophers, go here.

Quick Hits

The weekend held some of the biggest games of the year, with some very telling moments on how to view team and their victories, while others had a come-to-Jesus moment on what they need to fix and quickly.

Auburn Stuns Georgia

The Bulldogs have looked surprisingly great all season long, despite rolling with true freshman quarterback Jake Fromm. But the Auburn Tigers came into the game out to prove they are still one of the best teams in the SEC.

Against a Bulldogs roster that has prided themselves on dominating the line of scrimmage this season, the Tigers ran for 237 yards while racking up four sacks and six quarterback hurries. The defense consistently put a strain on young Fromm, while star running back duo Nick Chubb and Sony Michel were held to a mere 48 yards. Not only does this potentially drop Georgia out of the playoff race, it also makes the Iron Bowl the potential game of the year.

Miami Is For Real

The storied Catholics against Convicts rivalry went down last weekend as the No. 3 Fighting Irish went on the road to take on the No. 8 Miami Hurricanes. The result was a 41-8 rout, as the Hurricanes forced four turnovers and held the Irish to 109 rushing yards.

While Miami played clean, efficient offense that totaled in 347 total yards, the defense was the story. Miami scored 24 points off turnovers, including a pick-six. After a season of tight wins against unranked teams, Miami has beaten ranked opponents in back-to-back weeks and they were not even close. They are the team to challenge Clemson in the ACC.

Ohio State Never Left

After being routed by Iowa, the Ohio State Buckeyes came back with a strong showing against Michigan State. Running backs J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber combined for 306 total yards and three scores in the destruction. The one thing the last few weekends have proven is that the Big Ten is very even. Ohio State is part of that.

Baker Mayfield Hype Train at All-Time High

After the massive performance from Mayfield against Oklahoma State, the Oklahoma Sooners quarterback followed it up with a 333-yard, three-touchdown day against TCU. Mayfield is running away with the Heisman race while single-handedly propelling the Big 12 to their first playoff berth.

Chain Gang

After getting backed up to his own end zone, South Carolina quarterback Jake Bentley threw a pick. A really bad pick. As Florida corner C.J. Henderson returned the interception and nearly takes it back he fumbles the ball into the end zone. There, South Carolina running back A.J. Turner picks up the ball and takes it all the way to the 24-yard line. This is not only the worst way a pick can turn around, but also sums up Florida’s season.

Heisman Watch

Stanford Cardinal running back Bryce Love is now fully healthy, and went for the hat trick against Washington to keep his name in the race.

Game Of The Weekend

The No. 2 Crimson Tide hit the road to play an up-and-down Mississippi State Bulldogs team over the weekend. The 14-point favorites went on their heels early, as the Bulldogs took a 21-17 lead in the third quarter. Bulldogs quarterback Nick Fitzgerald showed his toughness on read-option plays and hanging in the pocket, using strong instincts to find completions and finishing with 224 total yards along with a score.

However, the Tide came back, scoring 14 points in the fourth quarter to squeak out a victory. In the final 1:01, Alabama roared 68 yards down the field for a 26-yard score from Jalen Hurts to DeVonta Smith, pulling them ahead 31-24. Alabama ultimately stayed undefeated, despite the scare.

Play Of The Weekend

The Iowa State Cyclones had the Oklahoma State Cowboys on the ropes in a tight loss. One of the big plays in a highlight-filled game was wide receiver Allen Lazard’s one-handed touchdown catch, which he tipped to himself under very tight coverage.
