P.J. Fleck Confirms: Antoine Winfield Jr. to Start Thursday

Safety Antoine Winfield Jr. was cleared earlier in the week to play in the opener against Buffalo. Minnesota Golden Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck broke the news while doing an interview on WCCO radio.

Winfield was forced to leave practice because of a hamstring injury he suffered in practice on Aug. 8. After Winfield recorded 52 tackles last season, an interception and 2.5 tackles for loss, having him miss time with the secondary already depleted would have been a real problem. However, the injury seemed to be merely a tweak, and he’s primed for action in the opener.

New head coach Fleck can now operate with the full complement of his defense to kick off his first Gophers campaign.
