Vikings Owners Release Statement on Anthem Protests, Link Arms With Players

In response to President Donald Trump’s remarks, in which he said that players kneeling during the national anthem should be “fired,” Minnesota Vikings ownership, led by Zygi and Mark Wilf, released a statement prior to kickoff Sunday afternoon.

“Professional sports offer a platform unlike any other, a platform that can bring people from a variety of backgrounds together to impact positive change in our society. As owners, it is our job to foster an environment that recognizes and appreciates diversity of thought and encourages using this platform in a constructive manner. Rather than make divisive statements, we believe in promoting thoughtful, inspiring conversation that unifies our communities. We are proud of our players, coaches and staff for the important role they play in our community, and we fully support their constitutional right to respectfully and peacefully express their beliefs.”

During the national anthem, the Wilfs linked arms with many Vikings players and coaches as a display of unity. Some Vikings players did not link arms, instead opting to hold their hands over their hearts. Running back Jerick McKinnon stood behind the lineup with his hands on the shoulders of Vikings assistants.

Teams across the league responded to the president’s comments. The Pittsburgh Steelers, most notably, did not appear for the national anthem at Soldier Field before their game against the Bears.
