12/9 RECAP: San Diego Rallies to Defeat Iowa in Overtime

The Iowa Wild (11-8-5) tried and tried again, but could not quite hold on to a win Saturday night against the San Diego Gulls (10-11-1).

After holding two separate two-goal leads in the game, Iowa was unable to hold off the Gulls attack in the and lost 4-3 in overtime, thanks to a Ryan White — yes, that Ryan White — game-winner.

Following no score in the first, the Wild were able to score twice in the first 7:57 of the second period on goals by Mario Lucia and Sam Anas. San Diego quickly struck back on an Eric Fehr — the former Capital — goal, and the game went into the second intermission 2-1 for the home team.

After a failed breakaway in the first 30 seconds of the third by Fehr, Justin Kloos was able to capitalize for Iowa and make it 3-1 30 seconds later to give the Wild a comfortable third-period lead. With solid play from Niklas Svedberg in goal, Iowa looked to be well on its way to a win — as well as snapping a two-game losing skid.

However, that was not the case as Fehr and Kallie Kossilla scored less than two minutes apart to tie the game for the Gulls midway through the third. Iowa held on for dear life in the final minutes of the third and managed to get to overtime, securing a point on the night.

Both teams traded some quality chances in overtime, then Giovanni Fiore went in on a breakaway but was stopped in the zone by a great backcheck from Mike Caito. However, Svedberg had gone out of his crease to cut down Fiore’s angle and ended up running into both Fiore and Caito. All were down on the ice and the puck floated to White who put it in the empty net for the game-winner.

The loss was now a third in a row for Iowa, all of which have come in overtime.
