Yesterday it went 12 innings; Tuesday night it went six. Both games lasted a long time. A rain delay lasted over two hours, but cut the game to six innings, and the Minnesota Twins won their fourth straight over the Milwaukee Brewers, 7-4.
“Originally when they stopped it, they thought it was gonna be kind of a quick one,” said Molitor. “They were trying to make the best decision for the integrity of the game, and also with concern of player safety. So it took a while, which is okay.”
Phil Hughes went 6.0 innings, giving up six hits and four runs (three earned) on 88 pitches. Chase Anderson went 5.0, gave up 11 hits and five runs (four earned). Former Twin Blaine Boyer entered the game in relief, followed by Tyler Cravy.
He had left the clubhouse by the time we got in there, but he left everyone with this tweet:
Minnesota is now 4-9, and collected a season-high 14 hits. The weather delay was the first since Sept. 16 vs. Detroit, and it couldn’t keep Byung Ho Park from hitting his third home run of the season, Miguel Sano from hitting his first, or Eduardo Nunez from collecting his fourth multi-hit game.
“We kept scoring,” Molitor said. “A lot of people contributed, and it was good to see Park hit another homer, and Arcia get a couple more hits, and Joe had a big day going, and Dozier had a really big hit to extend the lead from one to two right before the delay.”
Joe Mauer now has a hit in nine straight games, and 11 of 13 games this season. With his single in the sixth inning he passed Harmon Killebrew (1713) for fourth on the Twins all-time list with 1714.
“You look at is results, and some of the calmness that he seems to be going through the course of his at-bats,” said Molitor. “People try to look at what he doesn’t do as opposed to what he still can do, and so far it’s been really good.”
Oswaldo Arcia also has multiple hits in three-straight games, and has reached safely eight times in his past 14 plate appearances.
With the long rain delay, the clubhouse was pretty cleared out for the night. They play at noon tomorrow, and then travel to Milwaukee for two more games against the Brewers.
