7/19: Twins Top Tigers 6-2 Behind Strong Milone Outing

It was an old fashioned pitcher’s duel — until the seventh inning — yesterday at Comerica Park.

Minnesota Twins starter Tommy Milone went 8.1 innings, allowing only two runs, both of which came when he was fatigued in the ninth inning.

“It feels good to go deep into a game,” he told the Star Tribune. “Obviously, that was a struggle early. But I just wanted to make sure I attacked the zone and I feel like I was pretty much able to do that.”

Anibal Sanchez, a longtime Detroit Tigers starter, has struggled this season with a 6.60 ERA (64 ERA+) in 23 starts, but was able to hold Minnesota to one run until giving up two earned runs in the seventh. He finished the night with 10 strikeouts.

“He did an outstanding job – that’s probably as good an outing as he’s had this season,” Detroit manager Brad Ausmus told the Associated Press. “He did give up three runs, but two of those were after he was out of the game. He had really good fastball command, and that’s big for him.”

Bruce Rondon entered in relief and was tagged for three earned runs while recording only two outs, leading to a five-run seventh and Minnesota’s first win over Detroit in eight games this season.

“He’s had a little trouble once the hitters have seen him a couple of times,” Twins manager Paul Molitor told the Associated Press when asked about Milone. “Tonight he seemed to have a nice mix.”
