FERRELL: Best and Worst Uniforms In Super Bowl History

Unless you live under a rock and have no concept of time, you are aware that Sunday is the long-awaited big game — the Super Bowl.

For those of us who love uniforms, this year’s matchup of New England and Philadelphia is seen as a pretty solid matchup. We can’t complain about either side with what they have, but man would a 1980 matchup between the two teams in home uniforms be sweet.

Anyway, since there have been 51 previous installments of this game, let’s take a stroll down memory lane and look at the best and worst uniforms worn in the Super Bowl.

The Worst

New Orleans Saints – Super Bowl XLIV

They cheated, so they get to be on this list. I don’t care if the uniforms are fine.

Ok, maybe I’m overreacting. Take them off the list.

St. Louis Rams – Super Bowl XXXVI

Two years previous, the Rams wore the great navy and yellow uniforms that they had adorned forever. But following that game, they decided to go with a more bolder look. Why would you do that? The gold pants just kill these uniforms. Please burn them.

New England Patriots – Super Bowl XXXI

Unlike the NHL, the NFL made it through the 90s relatively unscathed by drastic uniform changes. The Patriots, however, did not survive. They fell victim to some ungodly looking 90s uniforms. The Patriot on the shoulders is just a no-no here. I guess no teal though?

San Francisco 49ers – Super Bowl XXIX

Again, by comparison to what they abandoned, these are not good. Why are the 49ers trying to incorporate black into the uniforms? Please no. You had a perfectly fine uniform — one of the more iconic in the history of this league — and it took you nearly 20 years to correct this mistake.

The Best

St. Louis Rams – Super Bowl XXXIV

The Greatest Show on Turf gets the Super Bowl win in some fine looking uniforms. The Ram helmet and shoulders remain very iconic, despite the stinky history of the franchise.

New England Patriots – Super Bowl XX

When the Bill Belichick/Tom Brady era ends, the Patriots need to go back to these permanently. Pete Blackburn pitched a similar concept of these as a new jersey for the Patriots — but in classic NFL fashion — a good idea went to hell. The logo, uniform, etc need to come back. Another great uniform in NFL history.

Philadelphia Eagles – Super Bowl XV

As mentioned a couple of weeks ago before the Vikings were smoked, the Eagles uniforms pre-1996 with the kelly green are fantastic. The Eagles did make it to a Super Bowl with them — but in Vikings fashion — they were obliterated in the Super Bowl. Dick Vermeil – the coach of the Eagles at the time – would go on to do alright with a solid jersey in the Super Bowl later on in his career (see: St. Louis Rams, Super Bowl XXXIV).

Pittsburgh Steelers & Dallas Cowboys – All of the Super Bowls

Both are legendary uniforms that have gone unchanged over the years. You have to give them the respect they deserve, even if you love to hate these teams currently.
