Reports: Nick Easton Out For Season

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, guard Nick Easton’s season is likely done because of a herniated disc in his neck. He underwent surgery to correct it, which could allow him to come back to the team in future seasons.

The Vikings had been rotating Danny Isidora and Tom Compton as starting guards before other members of the interior line missed practices due to injury. Now, with Mike Remmers and Pat Elflein temporarily injured, both have been playing as starting guards with Cornelius Edison playing center.

When the season starts, it’s likely that one of those two will fill in as the starting left guard. Mike Zimmer told gathered media yesterday that the Vikings will certainly miss Easton, particularly the fact that “he’s a tough guy that does a great job of finding a way to get his job done.”

When asked to elaborate, Zimmer said that Easton was very athletic and that “he doesn’t give [defensive linemen] the same thing twice.”

He also mentioned that the Vikings have been reviewing free agents for every position, including guard. “We’re looking at all free agent areas, really,” he said. “That’s what those guys do at night. They come in here and watch — heck they watch other teams, they watch guys on the street. So yeah.”

Behind Isidora and Compton are undrafted free agent Aviante Collins — who has been playing guard in response to injuries at the position — new free-agent signings Josh Andrews and Cedrick Lang as well as sixth-round pick Colby Gossett.
