Luke Inman breaks down Pat Shurmur’s new offensive look he unveiled Sunday against the Chicago Bears. Shurmur’s “Jumbo Package” added an extra offensive lineman in Aviante Collins, which helped bully the Bears defense around all day. More beneficial, however, could be the value of another offensive package for opposing defenses to have to prepare for.
In all, Collins saw 28 snaps against the Bears, which is a drastic jump considering he had zero heading into Week 17. Even if the team chooses not to employ the package during the playoffs, those live game reps will prove to be ultra valuable for Collins heading into the offseason — an eerily similar scenario to last year when the team activated offensive tackle Rashod Hill in the final game to see what traits he had to work with before starting to scout for the NFL Draft just a few weeks later.
Hill now has become a focal point of the offensive line depth, proving to be an outstanding swing tackle filling in for both Riley Reiff and Mike Remmers at both tackle positions numerous times throughout the season.
While Collins’ long term future in the league is still far from clear, he did look smooth and athletic during his limited time Sunday and may have put enough on tape for the team to plug him into to their long-term development plans.
