After putting up video-game numbers in the defense-optional Big 12, millions will be watching intently to see if Baker Mayfield can translate that success to the NFL. Mayfield finished his career – one year with Texas Tech; three with Oklahoma – with 131 touchdowns and 30 interceptions, over 14,000 yards and a completion percentage of 68.5 percent.
Because of his smaller 6-foot-1 frame and at-times controversial personality, many have lumped him in with Johnny Manziel, but he is more of a pure passer and less of an improviser than Johnny Football, who rushed for about three times more yards per game than Mayfield and is about 10 pounds lighter.
Something they do have in common is that they were both Heisman winners. Mayfield was also a two-time Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. If a team becomes enamored with the former Sooner, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him go in the top five picks.
