The Minnesota Vikings continued a busy post-draft Monday by re-signing veteran cornerback Terence Newman, who will return to the team for a fourth season. Earlier in the day, they picked up Trae Waynes’ fifth-year option and announced a 17-man undrafted free agent class.
Newman turns 40 years old on Sept. 4. Assuming he makes the Week 1 roster, he’ll be the first Viking to play in his 40s since Brett Favre in 2010.
The veteran has appeared in all but one game in his Vikings career, making five interceptions and breaking up 25 passes over the past three seasons.
With DeAngelo Hall’s apparent retirement, Newman becomes the active interception leader in the NFL with 42 career picks since his rookie year of 2003.
The Vikings now are five strong at the cornerback position with Trae Waynes, Xavier Rhodes, Mackensie Alexander, Newman and first-round pick Mike Hughes. Newman’s signing likely reduces Hughes’ chance of being an impact defensive player in his rookie year.
