INMAN’S MOCK DRAFT COLLECTION
A bit like Memphis’s Darrell Henderson, we have another undersized, electric running back from a non-power conference school. Devin Singletary, 21, was the bellcow for Florida Atlantic and strung together three straight 1,000-yard seasons for the Owls (bordering on 2,000 yards as a sophomore).
Analytically measured out as one of the shiftiest running backs in college football and became a Doak Walker semi-finalist last year, which happened to be his worst season as Singletary’s yards per carry and impact in the receiving game decreased. The year prior he led the Owls to 11 wins as he ran for 100 or more yards in 12 straight games and became the school’s first AP All-American. His 5-foot-7 size and combine testing, however, could be concerning. He was bottom six in five of six tests.
Size
5-7, 203 pounds
Combine notables
40-yard dash: 4.66 seconds (T5th slowest at position)
Bench: 15 reps (T2nd worst at position)
Vertical: 35 inches
Broad jump: 117 inches (5th worst at position)
3-cone drill: 7.32 seconds (6th slowest at position)
20-yard shuttle: 4.4 seconds (4th slowest at position)
What the analysts say
“Undersized, three-down back with rare improvisational skill and toughness through contact to squeeze every yard he can from each carry. Singletary was asked to catch it less in 2018, but he’s a tough cover out of the backfield and has the dog in him to step up and deliver a lick in blitz pickup. He ran poorly and did not test well in short-area quickness events at the combine, which could hurt his draft standing, but might not deter him from NFL success as a complementary runner.” – Lance Zierlein, NFL.com
“Devin Singletary is one of the most fun prospects you’ll watch. Singletary pairs a high volume workload with tremendous contact balance, lateral agility, vision and an aggressive running style to really put defenders in a bind. Singletary is something of a one dimensional player currently, but make no mistake, he’s got ample upside and at the very worst is an early down and short yardage option who would thrive in either gap/power or inside zone rushing offenses.” – Kyle Crabbs, The Draft Network
