Terrill Hanks is looking to settle in at a new position as he transitions to the NFL. Hanks began as a safety at New Mexico State – a good one, at that – but switched to linebacker as a senior to better accommodate his size and experienced some growing pains, particularly in coverage and tackling. He also injured his ankle at the end of the 2018 season.

Hanks was on record saying he hoped to run a 4.5 40-yard dash at the combine, but a hamstring injury made him about a half-second slower. Hanks should be naturally more gifted against the pass considering his past experience, so teams may view him as a promising three-down linebacker.

Size

6-2, 242 pounds

40-yard dash: 4.98 seconds (last at position)
Bench: 21 reps
Vertical: 35.5 inches
Broad jump: 118 inches

What the analysts say

“Linebacker prospect with productive four-year resume to catch the attention of the scouting community. Hanks is active and plays downhill, but he can be overactive and inefficient in his flow to the ball, leading to missed run fits and tackles. He is an average athlete in space so he will need to improve his play strength and recognition quickness in order to be more than a backup and special teams contributor.” – Lance Zierlein, NFL.com

“Hanks’ ability in coverage, range and urgency makes him an ideal candidate to function as a weakside linebacker in a 4-3 defense. His shortcomings taking on blocks, playing into the line of scrimmage and processing does limit his versatility but he is still new to playing linebacker after transitioning from safety to linebacker as a senior. Hanks should be a core special teams player while providing value in sub-packages initially in his career but development is needed for him to be a starter.” – Joe Marina, The Draft Network
