Tight end Zach Gentry’s formidable size makes him unique in this tight end class. At 6-foot-8, he has three to four inches on many of his counterparts. Gentry had two productive seasons at Michigan as a junior and senior, getting over the 500-yard mark in his final season. Actually played quarterback at his New Mexico high school but quickly made the switch to tight end. Didn’t register any stats until his junior season. Gentry’s large build hurt him at the combine as he finished bottom five in every category, including strength. But that size is also what gives him a trump card that can make up for any speed or explosive deficiencies.

Size

6-8, 265 pounds

Combine notables

40-yard dash: 4.9 seconds (4th worst at position)
Bench: 12 reps (worst at position)
Vertical: 29.5 inches (3rd worst at position)
Broad jump: 110 inches (T3rd worst at position)
3-cone drill: 7.4 seconds (2nd worst at position)
20-yard shuttle: 4.53 seconds (worst at position)

What the analysts say

“With his size and background at Michigan, teams might be tempted to play him as a combination tight end with run-blocking duties, but he’s much better-suited in space than in the trenches. Gentry runs pretty well and moves fluidly as a route-runner, but his hands and focus can be maddening. He showed flashes of what he could do with a more capable quarterback last year, but his disappointing workouts and testing might have pushed back and out of the draft.” – Lance Zierlein, NFL.com

“Zach Gentry is a seam-buster Tight End prospect who has attractive size and mobility to be considered a receiving asset at the next level. His height will serve as a natural barrier to playing with necessary functional strength, but when Gentry is placed into space and allowed to work vertically he does strong work against linebackers and safeties. Gentry may never be a featured full-time TE but his skills have a place at the next level as a receiving threat.” – Kyle Crabbs, The Draft Network
