The Chicago Bears loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night was about as ugly as ugly gets. Turnovers, dumb penalties, and coaching ineptitude once again struck as the Monsters of the Midway continued to barrel towards a high draft pick and a coaching change.
But, is that where the fault really lies? Who should we be blaming? Is it Matt Nagy? Is it Ryan Pace? Is it the players on the field? Colin Cowherd thinks it’s none of the above. On his popular radio show, The Herd on Fox Sports Radio, Cowherd posited that all of the above are just symptoms of a larger problem. The Chicago Bears need an entire re-brand.
After sharing his love the city of Chicago, where he has a home, Cowherd leaned into the Bears identity and his desire to change it. Much like the Cubs changed their brand with Theo Epstein, Cowherd believes the Bears need to move on from their past and embrace a new identity. Specifically, its the Bears tough guy mentality that Cowherd thinks pigeon holes them in todays NFL.”Stop honoring the ’85 Bears.” Cowherd said. “Yes, it was great in 1985. So was MTV, Downtown Julie Brown and members only jackets.”
Cowherd highlighted Chicago’s devastating lack of success since their 2005 run by picking apart the organizations constant effort to build a dominate defense while only having the same amount of over .500 seasons as the lowly Detroit Lions during that time. You can watch Cowherd‘s full comments below and you should. Although he can be easy to disagree with, Cowherd is pretty spot on with this one.
