Aaron Rodgers Is About To Get The Tom Brady Bump

Sunday was, at least for the moment, a season saving win for the Green Bay Packers. Beyond the sweet satisfaction of coming back in dramatic fashion to beat Mike McCarthy, the overtime victory was filled with positives. The run game was heavy and successful, the play action was at its best all year, and Christian Watson finally had the game we knew Christian Watson was capable of.

But maybe most importantly, we saw the real Aaron Rodgers. This season has been filled with a weird combination of bad body language Aaron and zen press conference Aaron. But not Sunday. As the Packers roared back, we watched Aaron gallup up and down the field pumping his fist after a deep touchdown. We watched Aaron throw a lead block on a crucial run. We watched as Aaron turned and delivered vintage emotion after the game tying touchdown. We saw that bad ass mofo that the league has come to fear for so long.

So what the hell does any of this have to do with Tom Brady?

Two weeks ago against the Rams the Buccaneers were dead in the water. Needing a touchdown to win they drove the field with under two minutes to play. But after a crucial drop in the end zone, they failed to score and turned the ball over on downs. Jalen Ramsey ripped his helmet off and started celebrating and Tom Brady’s season was essentially over.

Then it happened.

The Rams went three and out and gave it back to the Bucs with around 38 seconds to play. Tom immediately marched the Buccaneers down the field and scored the game-winning touchdown with a few seconds left. In the post game press conference Brady, a man who had looked beaten and tired all season long, bounced up onto the podium stage with a new energy. He walked to the mic, smiled at everybody, and said “That was awesome. That was f*!#ing awesome.”

Not only had the Buccaneers won and saved their season but they had essentially changed the entire mood and outlook of their organization. The energy that came from that sort of victory seemed like it could propel them forward, and it did. This Sunday in Germany they took on one of the hottest teams in the league and looked more like the old Buccaneers than they have all season.

When things start to click and a Hall of Famer starts feeling it, magic can happen. Losing streaks can end, locker rooms can rally, and seasons can turn around. Quarterbacks, especially elite ones, are leaders nearly unmatched in the sports landscape. The Buccaneers received the Brady bump if you will. One good thing happened and their superstar came alive with energy and everybody else followed.

It might not be perfect but the Bucs are on their way back.

This victory against Dallas has the ability to do the exact same for Aaron Rogers and the Green Bay Packers. To come back from 14 down to win in overtime against your former coach is amazing. When you couple that with your much-maligned draft pick finally breaking out and Aaron Rodgers finally seeming like his old self, you might really have something here.

Green Bay didn’t just finally execute on a decent game plan that could work going forward, they proved to themselves it could work going forward. The energy post game was so different from anything we’ve seen this season.

Maybe it’s too late, but I fully expect this Packers team to get better each and every single week going forward. I fully expect this game to give Aaron Rodgers the same bump that the Rams game gave Tom Brady. With a muddy NFC that might be enough to get the Green and Gold back in the conversation.
