There’s been no shortage of articles written concerning Aaron Rodgers’ weapons heading into the 2022 season. Do they need to make a trade? Can Aaron win with these guys? Who’s going to step up? And for the most part these questions and articles make sense. Aaron’s a Hall of Fame quarterback in the twilight of his career. It’s difficult to watch him always seems to be a weapon or two short in the most important playoff moments.
When you add in that Green Bay hasn’t spent a first-round draft pick on a wide receiver in 2 decades, you start to understand why we will probably have to read Odell Beckham Jr. to the Packers rumors for the first half of the season.
There is hope, however, for a large portion of the fan base that one of their draft picks could step up huge and explode onto the scene. Many thought that pick would be Christian Watson. He was the obvious candidate.
But it’s been Romeo Doubs, the second receiver taken by the Green and Gold, who’s been catching the eye of the Cheeseheads. On Friday Brent Sobleski of Bleacher Report listed Doubs in the No. 2 spot on his top 10 list of draft day steals.
The summer of Romeo Doubs continues after the Green Bay Packers chose him with this year’s 132nd overall pick. Doubs continually showed in practices and preseason games that he’s a dynamic vertical threat with a special catch radius.
Doubs wasn’t supposed to be the guy, though. The Packers traded up in the second round to acquire Christian Watson with the 34th overall pick. But Watson wasn’t ready for the start of camp, and Doubs shined every single day.
Indeed he did. And Matt Lafleur certainly noticed that shine.
This is nothing new to Packer fans, but it’s nice to see an article written about the positivity coming out of that group instead of what needs to be fixed. There’s every reason to believe that Lazard takes a gigantic leap up this year and that a young guy like Doubs could really break out as a rookie in Matt LaFleur’s system.
We might be in to the season and look back at all this wide receiver preseason talk the same way we mocked the non stop Aaron Rodgers coverage dramatics from a year ago. If Doubs is as good as Sobleski and Packer fans think he is, it’s going to be a fun season.
