Rich Eisen Isn't Convinced Aaron Rodgers Can Handle New York

As one of the preeminent voices in the NFL media and a lifelong Jets fan Rich Eisen is very interested in how the Aaron Rodgers saga plays out. Don’t get him wrong, he would love to have the Hall of Famer playing for his favorite team. But Eisen wonders if Rodgers truly grasps what it means to play in New York.

“I just don’t know if Rodgers fully completely 1000% grasps that whatever happened in Green Bay will not matter in New York. You know. That throw that he missed over the middle, he didn’t see one of his receivers, I think it was Lazard in the playoff game two years ago in the snow against San Francisco. Missed it. The throw was open.…In Green Bay you’ll see some people on Twitter saying Rodgers isn’t perfect but everyone in Green Bay shrugs. Rodgers is our guy. And he’ll do the I love you thing(shows Rodgers hand signal) going off the field. This thing(hand signals) won’t work in New York.

If he comes to New York and misses throws and New England still has its way with the Jets and Belichick still has its way? I don’t know why you’d want to take that on to be very honest with you and plus some of what you’re saying on McAfee show that doesn’t get any run in the local media as far as I’m concerned. Any run in the local media. Some people that hear it and don’t ascribe to the same echo chamber that it appears Rodgers lives in, I think that that would light up 24/7 stations, radio stations, multiple talk shows…I don’t know if Rogers would want a piece of that. Now he could play lights out and be comfortable and make his money and win a championship and he would be also on the positive side of things the toast of New York. I mean the King of New York. I just don’t see him wanting to take on a new spot and a new challenge in New York where a lot of things in Green Bay are overlooked or shrugged off or not chewed up and spit out in the way that he’s taking it. In the way that he feels the media treats him or doesn’t treat him properly or has an ax to grin….If he says this stuff in New York City I don’t know how it would play. It would certainly play different than it currently does in Green Bay.”

All very valid points. For as much as we discuss the criticism Rodgers receives we often neglect the complete benefit of the doubt he is given by Green Bay’s unique fan base. Packers fans are not just fans they are owners. It is a different mentality. It’s them against the world. There might be more to do and the lights might be brighter in New York, hell there might even be more offensive talent, but the criticisms will be louder. Regardless of Rodgers’ pension for acting like he is unbothered by such things it’s pretty easy to see the man has somewhat thin skin. To Rich’s points a few bad throws in a few important moments and you might get some very different appearances on the Pat McAfee show.
