Stating the Obvious: Playing With a Lead Greatly Helps the Vikings’...

Only twice in the last 30 years have teams recorded nine or more sacks twice in the same season: Jacksonville in 2017 and the Minnesota Vikings this year. Matthew Stafford and Ryan Tannehill may need to a form a support group — perhaps one that serves Ibuprofen as an hors-d’oeuvres — after facing the Vikings’ defensive front this season. Stafford was taken down 10 times on Nov. 4 in a 24-9 loss. Tannehill was sacked nine times Sunday — eight times in a second-half onslaught — in a 41-17 Vikings win. The second half was truly staggering for the Vikings against Tannehill, who hurt his ankle the week prior and was not at 100 percent. Fans of a sympathetic ilk might’ve been wondering if there was some kind of mercy rule to institute. The Dolphins’ Kalen Ballage converted a 75-yard touchdown run on their first play from scrimmage in the second […]

Minnesota Vikings Bye Week Awards

For the third straight year, the Minnesota Vikings hit the bye week on a bit of a roll, having won four of the last five games to correct a slow start. Now it’s time for some rest, some self scouting and the beginning of preparations for the final seven weeks. The 5-3-1 record seems modest compared to expectations, but if the Vikings storm out of the bye with four straight wins as they did a year ago, they’ll be comfortably in the playoff picture. If they limp out of the bye like in 2016, it will be a different story. But with the next Vikings football game almost two weeks away, we’ll pause and take stock of the proverbial first half of the season in the form of our Bye Week Awards. Here we go. TOP ROOKIE Several weeks ago, the winner of this category would almost certainly have been […]

Stifling Pass Rush Powers Vikings’ Best Defensive Performance of the Season

For a handful of weeks the Minnesota Vikings defensive line was holding its own while Everson Griffen dealt with a mental health issue and a smattering of others missed time with various injuries. Now they’re all back, they’re getting healthier, and they’re building confidence. And for the rest of the NFC North, that should be concerning. The Vikings sacked Matthew Stafford 10 times in Sunday’s 24-9 win, the most sacks in franchise history. Subtract 56 yards from Stafford’s sacks, and the Lions barely cracked 200 total yards — a feeble showing in Detroit’s first game without recently-traded star receiver Golden Tate. On the other hand, Minnesota’s pass-rushing unit was the most complete its been all year against Stafford, between an improving — and better-conditioned — Griffen, a seemingly-unstoppable Danielle Hunter, a rejuvenated Tom Johnson and a host of others. It put forth the 11th double-digit sack performance since the turn […]

RAPID REACTION: Vikings Blitz Stafford, Lions in 24-9 Win

The Minnesota Vikings failed to sack Drew Brees in their 30-20 loss last Sunday. One week later, they delivered one of their most suffocating defensive performances in recent memory in a 24-9 victory against the Detroit Lions to get to the bye week at 5-3-1. Danielle Hunter, Tom Johnson, Sheldon Richardson and Everson Griffen led a relentless pass rush that terrorized Matthew Stafford, who’s had plenty of nightmarish games against the Vikings in the past, including a seven-sack outing in 2015 at Ford Field — but Sunday’s game was a notch worse as Stafford dropped back nearly 50 times. Minnesota sacked Stafford 10 times: 3.5 for Hunter, 2.5 for Johnson and 1.5 for Everson Griffen. To cap it all, Hunter returned a Stafford fumble on an improvised lateral for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal the game. The Vikings defeated the Lions for the first time in three […]
