Gersson Rosas Believes in Ryan Saunders

Ryan Saunders was munching on a bag of potato chips Friday afternoon at the NBA’s pre-Draft combine in Chicago. Two seats to Saunders’ left sat Larry Bird and a few seats further down the way to his right sat Rick Carlisle, Frank Vogel, Tim Hardaway, David Griffin and Peja Stojakovic, along with hundreds of other NBA coaches and league executives. Perhaps it is only natural that a narrative of nepotism would formulate when the son of one of the league’s most well-respected coaches is given a head coaching job at 32 years old. It isn’t uncommon in today’s corporate world for Succession to occur — advancing the careers of underqualified candidates that receive opportunities based on their last name. But watching Saunders interact with legends like Bird and Carlisle and the rest of the NBA fraternity this past week was a good reminder that Saunders is not one of those nepotistic […]

Gersson Rosas Minnesota Timberwolves Solution: Working from the ‘Inside-Out’

When Daryl Morey was hired by the Houston Rockets in 2006, he inherited a 26-year-old Gersson Rosas onto his basketball operations staff. Rosas had already worked in the Rockets organization for three years as both a video coordinator and personnel scout prior to then-Rockets owner Leslie Alexander hiring Morey, and his analytic-driven reputation, away from the Boston Celtics organization. Alexander’s idea was that Morey would differentiate himself from Houston’s previous general manager, Carroll Dawson, a former coach turned front office executive. With the hiring came the assumption that much if not all of Dawson’s staff — which, of course, included Rosas — would be replaced by a legion of Morey nerds. That didn’t happen. “Daryl gave me an opportunity when he came in and it changed my career,” said Rosas on Monday afternoon, shortly after a press conference that crowned him the new Morey of the Minnesota Timberwolves franchise. “I’m […]

Gersson Rosas is Set Out to Find a Balance Between Winning...

When Tom Thibodeau was announced as the new president of basketball operations and head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves, he was asked about when he’ll turn the Wolves into a winner. “Might as well get started,” he said with a smirk. Gersson Rosas, the Wolves new president, said “We want tangible change. We’re gonna focus on the process, we hope the results will come sooner rather than later” when asked the same question. Rosas’ first task as POBO will be to figure out how fast he needs to win in order to keep fans engaged and Karl-Anthony Towns bought in, and how to balance that with becoming a contending team for as long as possible. “It could take three months, or it could take three years. You just don’t know,” said Rosas when asked how long it will take to evaluate the team before making drastic changes. “I see enough […]

Dane Moore NBA Podcast: Britt Robson on Gersson Rosas Hiring

The Minnesota Timberwolves have hired Gersson Rosas as their new President of Basketball Operations, so Dane & Charlie invited Britt Robson (@brittrobson) to join...

The Task at Hand for Gersson Rosas and His Minnesota Timberwolves

Gersson Rosas is not Tom Thibodeau. For the Minnesota Timberwolves fanbase, that really feels like a win. But for the Minnesota Timberwolves franchise, the process of hiring Rosas was not all that different than hiring Thibodeau. Oddly, that’s a win too. The thrust of the thesis of hiring Rosas to be the franchise’s new president of basketball operations — acquiring a chief-decision maker whose previous stop was on the frontlines of an NBA revolution — is not all that different than the Thibodeau hiring. Back in 2016, Thibodeau was the crown jewel of the available coaches crop. The former NBA champion in Boston and Coach of the Year in Chicago was revered, at the time, as a revolutionary basketball mind. Thibodeau’s ICE scheme in Boston triangulated and strangulated offenses, particularly during the 2007-08 season as the Celtics led the league in defensive efficiency and neutralized Kobe Bryant in the Finals. […]
