6/18: Terry Ryan on Milone/Dean Swap, May/Sano Injuries and Arcia's Future

Minnesota Twins general manager Terry Ryan address the media on a bevy of topics before Saturday’s game, including the Pat Dean-for-Tommy Milone swap, injury updates on Trevor May and Miguel Sano and a little info on what might be in store for Oswaldo Arcia, who is in DFA limbo.

  • It’s not surprising, but Ryan said he’s gotten very goodreports on how Tommy Milone pitched at Triple-A Rochester. Milone’s contract was purchased after he posted a 1.66 ERA down there. “I think everything is favorable,” Ryan said. “I think he did everything he could possibly do to get back here. His numbers are pretty impressive, just like he was last year.”
  • Ryan was impressed with Milone’s work ethic down at Triple-A, especially given his contract status and that some players with his tenure could have sulked or just collected a paycheck. “Some would go down and just collect a check,” Ryan said. “Because he’s getting paid. He didn’t do that. He went down, he pitched, and he’s back.”
  • Ryan wouldn’t commit to whether or not he was surprised that Milone cleared waivers in the first place, but suggested the situation is/was complicated: “It’s an iffy thing,” Ryan said. “You never know about that waiver business. I’m not sure at that time maybe there wasn’t quite a need or urgency for teams to manipulate their roster and so forth. There were dollars involved, stuff like that.”
  • Ryan said May will throw on Sunday, but it wouldn’t necessarily be a bullpen. “He’ll throw (a bullpen) early this coming week,” Ryan said. “He’s going to throw (Sunday), but I’m not sure it’ll be a full-fledged bullpen. He’s getting better.” Ryan said he was uncertain if May would need a rehab stint, but he suspected so.
  • With Pat Dean sent to Rochester Friday night, Ryan said he wanted to see the left-hander work on his command and control. That’s Dean’s forte, Ryan said, and it got away from him quickly Friday night. “There’s nobody that can get away with pitching from behind in this league,” Ryan said. “Yesterday that happened. He threw some real good games for us. Unfortunately, yesterday he didn’t have a good game at all.” Ryan called Dean a smart kid, a good worker and everything you could want in a human being, but that he has to hit his spots.
  • Ryan didn’t want to tip his hand with regards to Oswaldo Arcia’s situation, but he did compare it to Milone’s in terms of timing and teams knowing a guy is available. Ryan said he’ll let the situation play itself out and see where it goes. The Twins have 10 days to release, trade or outright Arcia from when he was designated.
  • Sano took batting practice on the field for a second day in a row, and also ran. Ryan said that Sano also ran before Friday’s game, and will be put through an aggressive workout on Monday to assess his progress. “He’s doing better,” Ryan said. “Monday we’re going to put him through a pretty good ordeal here as far as agility, cutting, stopping and starting. He’s getting pretty close to starting to think about sending him out (on a rehab stint).” Ryan said Sano ran more than just around the bases during BP on Friday. Ryan said Sano and the team are both getting antsy, but that they’re not going to rush him back just because they’re struggling.
  • Ryan wasn’t ready to commit fully to Sano in the outfield once he returns: “I’m not sure exactly how it’s going to play itself out quite yet,” Ryan said. “It’s going to be a while before he’s ready. There’s no sense in me starting that process until I have to.”
