5/31: A's Top Twins 7-4; Sano Injured

A day after Byron Buxton was recalled from Triple-A, Miguel Sano is headed to the disabled list. The Twins slugger injured his left hamstring legging out an RBI in the third inning and was placed on the 15-day DL.

“It [hurts], because I want to help the team,” Sano, told the Star Tribune. “It’s more frustrating because I was hitting the ball well.”

Max Kepler has been called up to replace Sano. He was 2-for-12 in a limited stint with the team earlier this season, but was hitting .286 with 10 extra-base hits, six of them triples, in Rochester.

Starter Tyler Duffey was tagged for 10 hits and five earned runs in 4.2 innings pitched in the 7-4 loss.

“It felt like I was behind everyone 2-0,” Duffey told the Star Tribune. “I was fighting my fastball command all night. When I went out there in the first inning, knew it was going to be a rough one.”

Old friend Danny Valencia, who was selected by the Twins in the 16th round of the 2006 draft and played with the team from 2010-2012, drove in three runs, including a home run and a double.

“My swing is a lot different and I have a better approach,” Valencia told the Associated Press. “I have a better understanding of myself.”

Minnesota hung with the A’s all night, but in every inning that the Twins scored, Oakland either matched or doubled them.

“It’s frustrating, because there were [four] times when we scored,” Molitor told the Star Tribune, “and they came right back and answered.”
