7/18: Nolasco Goes Six, but Tigers Beat Twins 1-0

The Minnesota Twins’ offense continues to struggle coming out of the break. They were held to only three hits in a 1-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park — the fewest since managing only two hits against the Washington Nationals on April 23.

“You look up there in the middle innings and you’ve got a chance,” Twins manager Paul Molitor told the Star Tribune. “But our offensive troubles continue here through the first four games coming out of the break. We had trouble, particularly, with Boyd’s offspeed stuff.”

Max Kepler doubled in the fourth inning, representing the only runner in scoring position all night.

Detroit starter Matt Boyd threw six innings, recording seven strikeouts and only one walk. Ricky Nolasco also went six, giving up only three runs as well, including a second inning home run to Justin Upton.

“I never want to think that we’re only going to score one run,” Upton told the Associated Press. “It ended up being a big one.”

“It was a good pitch,” Nolasco said. “Tip the cap when a guy can do that.”

The Twins dropped to 0-7 against the division rival Tigers this season.
