5/2 PRACTICE NOTES: Heath takes a dig at Alexi Lalas, says turf is an issue and Calvo is fantastic

You’ll find below Minnesota United head coach Adrian Heath’s post practice press conference in its entirety, albeit separated into four parts.

Heath continued to expound open Francisco Calvo’s “outstanding” performance from the weekend against San Jose. Heath said Calvo is the team captain and is beginning to come to grips with playing in Major League Soccer.

Interestingly, Heath pointed out that a number of the players are struggling to practice on the artificial turf at the National Sports Center in Blaine. NSC has a natural grass field that United will eventually practice on, but a team spokesperson said the grass field isn’t quite ready yet.

“It’s a problem for us,” Heath said. “We need to get out on the grass as soon as possible.”

Minnesota is likely the last team in the league still practicing indoors, Heath said.

The divide, in Heath’s eyes, is that right now the team knows how to attack well and — finally — knows how to defend well, but that they need to combine the two. He said the match against Real Salt Lake — a 4-2 win — was a good example of that.

MLS rosters freeze next week. United’s phones have been ringing and they’ve been making calls themselves, Heath said.

“At this moment there’s nothing jumping out at us,” he said. “We don’t want to do anything just for the sake of doing it.”
