Brent Kallman Takes Side Job as Hill-Murray Coach

It looks like Brent Kallman has picked up a new side gig.

Hill-Murray School, a Catholic prep school for grades 6-12, announced this week that Kallman would be joining their staff as a program-wide coach.

“Brent’s playing experience provides our Pioneer players with a unique coaching perspective,” said varsity head coach Jeff Zupfer in a press release. “We are excited to Brent join the Pioneer Boys Soccer Program. I’ve known Brent since he was 10 years old and he brings a wealth of soccer experience from a soccer savvy family. His competitive drive and ability to teach the details of the game will help to raise our program. The players in the boys program are buzzing about the incredible resource we’ve added to our staff.”

It’s not uncommon for professional players to pick up a side job like this to supplement their income, though the move is sure to bring attention back to Kallman’s undersized contract with United.

Kallman has been one of the most pleasant surprises this season as he made an immediate impact on defense when given the chance to start and has consistently turned in solid performances.

Despite the quality of his play, Kallman is under a contract that was drafted and signed long before he was known as a sure thing for MLS. This year he will make about $68,000, just above league minimum. For perspective, the men on either side of him in the back four – Francisco Calvo and Jerome Thiesson – are due $330,000 and $210,000, respectively.

Kallman is the most obvious choice for a contract renegotiation during the offseason if his level of play continues. Hopefully, the club can find a way to compensate Kallman at a level commensurate with his contributions in the not-too-distant future.
