News & Notes: Wild Trim Roster, Signs Woodbury Defenseman

The Minnesota Wild training camp roster is down to 26 players as of Wednesday morning, with two players assigned to the club’s AHL team in Iowa and seven more placed on waivers.

Christoph Bertschy and Eden Prairie’s Kyle Rau, both forwards, were assigned to the Iowa Wild. Five forwards: Pat Cannone, Landon Ferraro, Kurtis Gabriel, Zack Mitchell and Cal O’Reilly, plus defenseman Alex Grant and goalie Niklas Svedberg were all placed on waivers. These players will head to Iowa on Thursday should they clear waivers.

Woodbury native signs contract

Brennan Menell, a 20-year-old defenseman, signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Wild on Tuesday. The Woodbury native got an invitation to the Wild’s development camp a couple of months ago, played at the Traverse City Prospects Tournament and played in his first preseason game with the Wild – scoring an assist – last Saturday against Colorado.

He was sent to the Iowa Wild on Tuesday, looking to compete for a spot on their roster coming out of camp.

According to the Wild, Menell was cut from St. Thomas Academy’s team as a sophomore, but he went on to play in the Western Hockey League. He put up 71 points in 70 games with the Lethbridge Hurricanes in 2016-17.

Regular season is almost here

The Wild are 3-2 this preseason with two games remaining. They’ll head to St. Louis Thursday night and host Dallas on Saturday.

They open the regular season on the road against the Detroit Red Wings on Oct. 5.
