RailCats Dominate Saints for First CHS Field Loss of Season

For the first time this season the St. Paul Saints lost a home game, falling to the Gary SouthShore RailCats 16-7 on Saturday night at CHS Field. It was a rough outing for Saints starter Jeff Malm, who lasted just two innings and gave up seven earned runs on nine hits.

He was relieved by South St. Paul native Ryan Schlosser who fared even worse, as he didn’t even get to record an out before being pulled.

Schlosser faced seven batters and all seven scored.

Ryan Boelter was able to get the Saints out of the inning without much further damage, and the rest of the bullpen contingent was able to keep the RailCats off the board for the most part, with the exception of a single run in the sixth inning.

The Saints attempted to keep it close, and at least early in the game, they were able to. They scored one in the first, off an RBI single from Jayce Boyd, and three in the second.

They brought out the big bats for the third inning, as Dante Bichette Jr. and Kes Carter hit back-to-back home runs, but that was the last time that the Saints were able to get on the board, as the RailCats held them scoreless for the last six innings.

The Saints and RailCats will play the final game of their series on Sunday evening when the Saints send Vinny Nittoli to the mound to face Daniel Minor. First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. After the game, the Saints will hop on a plane and fly to Texas to begin their annual two-week road trip to accommodate the MSHSL baseball tournaments held at CHS Field. This year’s trip will take them to Grand Prairie, Cleburne and Wichita before they finally return to CHS Field on June 8.

Notes

  • It was a full house on Saturday night thanks in large part to it being ‘bring your dog to the park’ night. Fans were able to bring their four-legged friends to the game. It is always one of the most anticipated promotions of the season for the Saints.
  • Sunday will feature a monster fireworks show to celebrate Memorial Day, and will have a monster food truck rally on the field. Both events will happen after the game. It’s also a Sunday kids day, where after the game kids will be able to run the bases and get autographs from Saints players and coaches.
  • Manager George Tsamis has 990 wins in his career, leaving him just 10 shy of the 1,000-win mark. He has 807 wins as manager of the Saints.
