REPORT: Case Keenum Will Not Receive the Franchise Tag

The wheels are finally beginning to spin on the Minnesota Vikings offseason.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Monday morning that the Vikings are “not expected” to franchise tag Case Keenum, a decision they are required to make by March 6.

This would not prevent Keenum from returning to the Vikings, but it could expose him to free agency, where his cost may outprice Minnesota’s budget if he has multiple suitors. The franchise tag would have cost the Vikings around $23 million for a one-year deal.

It’s worth noting that Rapoport reported on Jan. 21 that the Vikings were leaning toward franchising Keenum, meaning the team potentially had a change of heart in the last month.

Presumably, the Vikings will evaluate the market on Keenum, as well as other to-be free agents Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Bradford and Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins, before deciding how to allocate their funds.

Kyle Sloter is currently Minnesota’s only quarterback under contract.
