At an agile 280 pounds, Maurice Hurst Jr. shapes up to be a disruptive 3-technique defensive tackle in the NFL – assuming a heart condition doesn’t affect his career trajectory.
Hurst, whose father was a former Patriot, was sent home from the combine with an undisclosed heart condition, though he later participated fully in Michigan’s Pro Day. Another defensive tackle, Nick Fairley, had his career cut short because of a heart condition, which may give teams pause in drafting Hurst despite his immense talent.
He accumulated 32 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks in his four years at Michigan and put together the highest-graded season for an interior defender in Pro Football Focus history last year.
