The Green Bay Packers entered training camp with a kicking competition between Anders Carlson, Greg Joseph, and Alex Hale. However, the Packers claimed Brayden Narveson, who kicked for the Tennessee Titans during the preseason, on waivers, and he won the position.
Narveson made his NFL debut against the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil, converting both extra points and three of four field goal attempts in a 34–29 loss. He followed up by hitting three of four field goals and one extra point in a win over the Indianapolis Colts.
However, both of his missed field goals were under 46 yards, distances NFL kickers are expected to hit almost every time. His misses from 43 and 45 yards left Green Bay in challenging situations. Three more points could have changed each game’s flow.
Narveson’s missed field goals came from under 46 yards, which a reliable NFL kicker should convert nearly 99 out of 100 times. If he hadn’t missed the 43-yarder against the Eagles, Green Bay could have planned their final drive around a field goal. Similarly, the Packers might have put the Colts away earlier had he not missed a 45-yarder.
Malik Willis will likely be Green Bay’s starter until their Week 5 matchup with the Los Angeles Rams. Until Jordan Love returns, Green Bay needs flawless play from the defense and special teams to stay competitive.
Green Bay’s defense showed up against the Colts. However, the special teams must improve, especially in the kicking game. The Packers can’t afford to let points slip away. Every missed opportunity can be crucial in winning tight games, regardless of whether it’s September or January.
Special teams shortcomings have hurt the Packers recently, with notable failures in the 2021 and 2023 playoff exits. Given Green Bay’s 13-season Super Bowl drought, it’s crucial to avoid repeating past mistakes. Every phase of the team must be solid, especially with Jordan Love out, to keep the franchise on track.
It’s been some time since Green Bay had stability at kicker. Mason Crosby was reliable for over a decade but struggled in his final years with the team. Finding a consistent kicker is crucial for long-term success and not an easy task for every franchise.
The Packers edged out the Colts by six points, but relying on luck in close games won’t be sustainable against stronger competition. If the team wants to maintain playoff contender status when Love returns, they must ensure consistency across all phases. The coaching staff’s confidence in Narveson doesn’t mean the organization shouldn’t explore other options. A reliable kicker is crucial to finishing the season strong and reclaiming their place in the Super Bowl conversation.
