Carrington Valentine Has A Huge Opportunity In Front Of Him

The Green Bay Packers have placed a lot of trust in Jeff Hafley to develop the defensive backs room this offseason. They parted ways with Jaire Alexander but didn’t make any major moves to replace him. While they added Nate Hobbs in free agency, he’s primarily a slot corner and doesn’t completely fill the outside role Alexander once held.

Keisean Nixon should transition gradually into a full-time cornerback role, rather than dividing his responsibilities between defense and special teams. Even so, the Packers may already have an underrated player in the secondary who could emerge as a difference-maker if he takes full advantage of the opportunities in front of him: Carrington Valentine.

As a rookie, Valentine gave up only one touchdown and was credited with five pass breakups and six forced incompletions. His 84.1 passer rating allowed was the eighth-lowest among 28 rookie cornerbacks who logged at least 50 snaps in coverage.

He played 537 coverage snaps in 2023, but that number dropped to 371 in 2024. Despite the reduced role, he improved his coverage and overall defensive grades, finished with two interceptions and three pass breakups, and didn’t allow a touchdown.

Valentine finished the 2024 regular season on a high note, putting together a strong four-game stretch that included defensive grades of 90.2, 77.5, and 74.7. Furthermore, through his first two seasons in the league, he has allowed passer ratings of 80.2 and 82.8, so quarterbacks haven’t found much success when targeting him.

Valentine is the closest thing Green Bay has to a corner with a similar skill set to Jaire Alexander. While Alexander is clearly the more talented player, Valentine brings a comparable playing style as a sticky press-man corner. He’s also one of the most experienced outside cornerback on the roster, which carries added weight now that Alexander has signed with the Baltimore Ravens.

“I mean, he just plays aggressive,” Jayden Reed said of Valentine. “He likes to get his hands on (you), he’s lengthy. So, if he can get his hands on, he’s very competitive. He’s going to fight to the whistle. That’s just the fire he brings to the game.”

Hobbs and Nixon should open the regular season as Green Bay’s starting cornerbacks in base defense. Still, Valentine should see the field in 4-2-5 looks, likely holding down the outside while Nixon, Hobbs, or possibly Javon Bullard lines up in the slot. If Valentine makes the most of those snaps, he could push Nixon for a starting spot in base packages.

Valentine is building momentum in training camp, exactly what both the team and fans need to see at this stage of the season. Still, there is a difference between practice and in-game action, but it’s encouraging to see his confidence steadily building.

Valentine has already exceeded expectations for a former seventh-round pick. With Jeff Hafley’s strong track record of developing defensive backs, there’s reason to believe he can help Valentine reach a higher level. If that happens, Green Bay might uncover another star in the secondary and lock down a dependable starter for the foreseeable future.
