Packers Reportedly Have Made An Offer For DK Metcalf

It’s no secret that the Green Bay Packers must add a piece or two to their wide receiver room this offseason. They have a young group rich in talent, but nobody has emerged as a top option for quarterback Jordan Love.

According to one report, general manager Brian Gutekunst isn’t wasting time trying to find a solution.

Corbin Smith of the Emerald City Spectrum has reported that the Packers have made an offer to Seattle for D.K. Metcalf. Per Smith, the two sides have had discussions, with Green Bay offering a high pick and a young wide receiver.

Adding Metcalf to the picture would immediately solve Green Bay’s WR1 woes.

Metcalf has never posted below 900 yards in any of his five seasons in the NFL and has garnered at least 100 targets every season. He’s a vertical threat with three seasons of over 1,000 yards and two with double-digit touchdown totals.

So why would Seattle trade him?

Metcalf is entering the final year of his current deal and will likely command a hefty payday. Jaxon Smith-Njigba has also arguably leapfrogged Metcalf as the top option in Seattle.

In his second season, Smith-Njigba had more targets, receptions, yards, and touchdowns than Metcalf last year. Seattle could opt to pair the two and continue having a duo that would cause nightmares for opposing secondaries. Trading Metcalf in the final year of his deal would free up room for the Seahawks to allocate their money elsewhere.

There’s an argument to be made that Green Bay’s offense is a No. 1 wide receiver away from going to a completely different level. Gutekunst said in January that it’s time to start competing for championships, something he has hesitated to say directly in the past. A trade of Metcalf would show Gutekunst is backing up exactly what he is preaching.

If the Packers have made an offer, as Smith indicated, the ball is in Seattle’s court.
