Christian Watson’s Extension Is A Big Win For Green Bay

If you have ever paid attention to any media availability from the Green Bay Packers, whether from players or coaches, you know how much they value Christian Watson inside the locker room. That’s only part of the equation in understanding why his most recent contract extension is such a big win for the organization.

First, let’s get into the contract numbers: Watson signed a four-year, $110.5 million extension, which comes out to $27.6 million per year, with $31 million fully guaranteed through his signing bonus. At first glance, that might feel like a massive investment for a receiver who has yet to surpass 1,000 receiving yards in a season. However, that’s a result of where the wide receiver market stands right now.

When you compare Watson’s deal to some of the top recent contracts around the league, the numbers become more understandable. His average annual value is roughly 65.5% of what Jaxon Smith-Njigba earns per year.

His deal is also similar to the four-year, $116 million extension that Alec Pierce signed, but there is an important difference in the structure. Pierce received $84 million guaranteed, while Watson’s guarantees are significantly lower, which gives Green Bay much more long-term flexibility and protection within the deal.

Watson’s on-field production allowed the Packers to be comfortable making this investment. After returning from his ACL injury in Week 8 against the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, Watson was one of the most efficient receivers in football, ranking second in yards per catch at 17.5 and tied for fifth in touchdown catches with six. He also had just one drop on 55 targets.

Green Bay’s offense has been much better when Watson is on the field. From 2022 to 2025, the Packers posted an EPA per play of 0.088 with Watson compared to just 0.024 without him, along with a success rate of 46.11% versus 44.2%.

That difference might not look huge at first glance, but it matters a lot in practice. Last season, a drop from 46.11% to 44.2% in success rate would have moved an offense from around 10th in the league to roughly 17th.

We can’t talk about the numbers without mentioning the impact No. 9 brings as a blocker. He’s arguably Green Bay’s best blocking receiver, and there have been plenty of snaps where he’s not even part of the passing game but still puts on a clinic in the run game and on the perimeter.

That kind of effort, especially when targets are not coming his way, says everything about how he approaches the game. It is team-first, winning football. He’s exactly the type of player and personality you want in a locker room.

So it made total sense for the Packers to get a deal done with the player they hope will be their superstar receiver. They paid a fair price for someone who elevates everyone around him, statistically and in the way he impacts the offense. If you take his production from last season and project it over a full 17-game schedule, he would have finished with around 55 catches, over 1,000 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns.

There are naturally some injury concerns, especially given his history of hamstring issues and the recent ACL injury. However, the hamstring problems have not really been a factor anymore, and many players tear their ACLs and remain productive. It’s the kind of injury that can happen in a split second to anyone on any play.

Green Bay’s decision to re-sign Watson and extend Jayden Reed also tells you exactly where they stood on the rest of the receiver room, especially after allowing Romeo Doubs to leave in free agency and trading Dontayvion Wicks.

Another good thing about this Watson extension is that you can immediately tell who actually watches the games and who only looks at the box score. Because anyone who has seen him on the field understands this is a well-earned extension for a former second-round pick who impacts the game in far more ways than the stat sheet always shows.
