The Vikings decided to double-dip at kick returner by grabbing another prolific special-teamer in Miami’s (Fla.) Stacy Coley, who also moonlights as an athletic slot receiver with a penchant for acrobatic catches. He should compete with Rodney Adams, a fifth-round pick, for the primary kick-returning spot.
Coley is a yards-after-catch specialist whose ten-yard split (1.52 seconds) is among the best at his position and is representative of his ability to explode out of breaks or create extra yards as a ball-carrier.
Despite being pigeon-holed as a smaller slot receiver, Coley has impressive arm length and should be able to fill in underneath while other receivers flood deep and intermediate. His ability to find space before and after the catch will be where he makes his money.
Coley has a significant penalty problem, with eight false starts in the last two years and nine other penalties. That lack of discipline extends to his route-running, where his inability to bait defensive backs has led to issues creating the space he needs to thrive.
