REPORT: Twins Promoting Reliever Gabriel Moya

A couple interesting tweets have come out in the last day or so that intimate that the Minnesota Twins may be on the verge of promoting another relief prospect.

Jake Depue of 1500 ESPN wondered aloud whether the Twins would consider promoting Moya at the end of the Southern League season.

and Jeff Bajenaru, who some might remember for brief MLB stints as a reliever with the Chicago White Sox from 2004-05 and one appearance in 2006 with the Arizona Diamondbacks, chimed in with the following:

Bajenaru is the pitching coach of the Visalia Rawhide, where Moya spent a majority of the 2016 season, posting a 2.01 ERA in 44.2 innings. Bajenaru’s first year coaching at Visalia was 2016 under manager J.R. House — a former big league catcher.

Furthermore, Bajenaru followed that tweet up with this (just recently):

The Twins have not issued a release but are off on Monday with the San Diego Padres coming into town for a brief two-game set at Target Field starting Tuesday. With Chattanooga’s season over with a share of the Southern League title — thanks to a walk-off home run from Jon Rodriguez — it makes sense for the move to come now.

The Twins will have to make room on the 40-man roster for Moya.

Moya was absolutely dominating after coming over from the Diamondbacks organization in a trade, posting a 0.61 ERA in 14.2 innings with the Lookouts. Moya fanned 11.7 batters per nine innings and walked just 1.8 per nine with a 0.75 WHIP. Moya also went more than three months between allowing earned runs, as he allowed two earned runs on May 1 — to the Lookouts, oddly enough — and he allowed an earned run on Aug. 4 — and again, oddly enough, this was to the Jackson Generals, where he was playing before the trade.
