Vikings Trade For Giants C Brett Jones

The Minnesota Vikings announced Sunday afternoon that they’ve agreed to a trade for New York Giants center Brett Jones, pending a physical, reportedly in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick.

Jones appeared in all 16 games last year for New York, starting 13 at either center or left guard. He appeared in 14 games and started one in 2016.

Minnesota desperately needed another offensive lineman with center flexibility after losing Nick Easton and Josh Andrews to injury while still waiting for Pat Elflein’s return from offseason ankle and shoulder surgery.

Head coach Mike Zimmer said he didn’t think Elflein would be forced to go on the physically unable to perform list to start the regular season — which would cause him to miss at least six games — but the coach didn’t put a timeline on Elflein’s return. The former third-round pick has yet to practice this offseason.

“He’s going to practice when he’s ready to go,” Zimmer said Sunday. “I don’t know when that’s going to be.”

Jones, 27, played two seasons with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League before signing with the Giants.
