Patrick Peterson Shuts the Door on Larry Fitzgerald to Minnesota

It’s a fun dream. The former Minnesota Vikings ball boy returns home for his final NFL season and ends his Hall of Fame career in purple.

No one knows exactly why Larry Fitzgerald has yet to announce his intentions for the 2021 season. Will he retire? Will he return? And if so, where? The tiny crack in that door has led Vikings fans to continue to imagine Fitzgerald catching touchdowns for their favorite team. Unfortunately, Patrick Peterson may have just slammed that door shut.

On Peterson’s popular podcast, All Things Covered, he took a question from a listener asking his thoughts on the chances of Fitzgerald coming to Minnesota. Without even a moment of hesitation Peterson responded “zero.” Peterson isn’t convinced Fitzgerald will retire, even suggesting he may return at some point during the middle of the season, but he made it clear there is only one place he believes Larry Fitzgerald could play this year. Arizona.

Is Peterson the end-all be-all for Larry Fitzgerald answers? No. But as long time teammates and as someone in the fraternity a player-hood it’s easy to believe Peterson‘s word is worth far more than any NFL insiders speculative tweet.

With Irv Smith Jr’s injury, Mike Zimmer suggested the team would likely move to more three wide receiver sets on third down. With no Vikings receiver clearly elevating themselves to the answer at WR3 Fitzgerald was at least worth a conversation. The truth is however, if they really wanted to bolster their receivers room there’s might be a better option out there in Golden Tate. Yes Fitzgerald would be an amazing story and make all of us feel good, But Tate is younger and likely ready to be more productive in what will be a really important season for the Vikings. Honestly, I don’t see the team making a move on either of these two or any wide receiver for that matter.

It was nice to dream, but the reality is Rick Spielman likely isn’t looking to add anyone, and according to Peterson it wouldn’t matter anyway.
