Colin Cowherd Reveals Biggest Aaron Rodgers Concern Heading In To Season

“No reasonable person thinks this is going to be an elite receiving room. You are crossing your fingers it’s functional.”

These were the words that fell out of Colin Cowherd’s mouth as reacted to Aaron Rodger’s comments and subsequent meeting with his receivers earlier this week.

Cowherd’s thoughts seemed less to bash the room and more intended to point out a juxtaposition. As the popular radio host walked through each player individually he landed on what appeared to be his larger point;

“You’re getting to a point where Aaron’s a very particular quarterback. He likes certain things. So does Brady. And that certain thing is great veteran players Randy Moss, Mike Evans. Aaron likes Davante Adams, Jordy Nelson in his prime, Greg Jennings in his prime. So listen, what I think is going to be fascinating is to watch Aaron, because in week 1 they play Minnesota, week 3 Tampa with a ton of weapons. If you lose those games it’s just going to be interesting. You start losing those games, how does Aaron react after the game if you lose those games simply because you don’t have enough weapons to win a shootout? Now maybe Green Bay’s defense is good enough that you don’t get in shootouts, but you start looking at this schedule and there are some teams with a lot of offensive weapons. Aaron is not going to have a great receiving corps. Is it functional? We will find out. But I liked them meeting.”

Although some Packer fans may file these comments under the category of media drama there certainly may be some merit to Cowherd’s point. Especially given Rodgers long history with moodiness. An underwhelming room and a slow start could certainly undermine a team that just lost its best offensive weapon and, as Cowherd also pointed out in his comments, hasn’t drafted a wide receiver in the first round in 20 years.

The easy argument here is that guys like Jordy Nelson and Greg Jennings and perhaps even Davante Adams aren’t completely what they’re made out to be without Aaron Rodgers in the equation. Hopeful Packer fans will assume Allen Lazard, given the main targets, will simply ascend to the upper tier of NFL receivers and everything will be fine. That certainly might end up being the case. Only time will tell if cowherd’s concern is valid or just typical preseason BS.
