In life, business, and relationships things are often much simpler than outsiders want them to be. But, simple isn’t sexy. And it sure as hell doesn’t make money.
Sports entertainment is often driven by this concept. The major networks and twitter journalists give us the gossip, the rumors, and the most extreme possibilities because that’s what sells. But even in sports, we know, the answer is usually much less divisive.
So much has been made about Aaron Rodgers and his young wide receivers in the absence of Davante Adams. As ESPN and others have stoked the fire weeks 1 through 3, both the Raiders’ and Packers’ fan bases have felt the heat of their dramatics.
But what happens when you bring an outsider with no agenda in? What sort of assessment will you get with somebody who actually knows the truth?
Pat McAfee is beloved by our favorite Hall of Fame quarterback and fan base because he doesn’t buy into the BS. He doesn’t push narratives just for the sake of pushing them. Even if it doesn’t get him clicks, he will tell a simple truth in a place where many would give a more exaggerated version.
McAfee is a weekly guest on Get Up on ESPN with Mike Greenberg. On his latest appearance, before Greenberg let him go he tried to needle in an opportunity for McAfee to stir up some drama.
“I have to get in a question about your guy Aaron Rodgers…down deep inside when he has one of these really honest moments just how much do you think he misses Davante Adams?”
McAfee didn’t take the bait.
What followed was a simple and very human explanation of Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams relationship and Adams departure from Green Bay. McAfee pointed out that the two men loved one another. He even used an example from the game Rodgers missed last season to display their affection.
He went on to explain the business aspect of the game and lay out the very simple overall truth. These two guys are incredible friends and will continue to be. Adams made a decision that he believed was best for him and his career and they both respect one another in that regard. There’s no drama. There’s no fireworks.
