The Green Bay Packers typically don’t dive into the free-agency waters to add players considered older. Green Bay boasted the youngest roster in the NFL two years in a row and isn’t shy about mentioning it.
Could there be an exception to the rule? One reporter has listed the Packers as a “team to watch” for former All-Pro wide receiver Cooper Kupp.
The Rams released Kupp on Wednesday after they couldn’t find a trade partner.
At the peak of his powers, Kupp was as dominant a wide receiver as there was for a three-year stretch from 2019 to 2021. While Kupp isn’t that receiver anymore, he’s still highly productive when he is on the field.
However, injuries have become a problem for Kupp. The 31-year-old has missed a combined 18 games in the last three seasons. Despite the missed time, Kupp has seen at least 95 targets in the last three years and has no less than five touchdowns and 710 yards in any season.
So, how would he fit with the Packers?
That’s the interesting part.
Green Bay needs a No. 1 wide receiver. Kupp was that at one point, but those days may be behind him. On top of that, if the Packers had the best of both worlds, they would find a No. 1 wide receiver who can also take the lid off a defense as a deep threat down the field.
That’s not what Kupp is known for.
Beggars can’t be choosers, though. The market at wide receiver is extremely thin, while Green Bay still needs to add in some capacity.
Kupp reportedly has numerous suitors, and this will probably go down like most situations free-agency situations with the Packers, where the player signs elsewhere, but Green Bay was said to be “in the discussion.”
