Do you have any friends or loved ones with impeccable taste? The kind of person who, no matter how unappetizing a restaurant sounds or how bad a movie looks, if they say it’s good, you gotta give it a shot? There’s something to be said for people with a keen eye for quality. If they see something appealing, they’re probably on to something.
Brian Flores’ track record in Minnesota makes me think he deserves that level of credibility. Flores has excelled at getting the most out of the various pet projects. Guys like Josh Metellus, Blake Cashman, and Isaiah Rodgers stand out as successful “Flores guys” whom he either developed or advocated for.
So for him to sign off on his only meaningful addition to the secondary heading into 2026, and feel confident heading into the season with James Pierre as the only substantive piece the Vikings added to a secondary in need of depth, should tell us one thing: Brian Flores really likes James Pierre. And Flores has earned the credibility to trust his recommendation.
I’m not going to try to argue that Pierre is the second coming of Deion Sanders. But during Flores’ tenure in Minnesota, the Vikings have treated the cornerback room like a weak-link system rather than a place to invest in potential superstars.
They aren’t spending their capital in free agency or the draft in finding the unicorn, lock-down corners who are so hard to come by — and who subsequently require high picks and demand big contracts. The Vikings have moneyballed this position with a reasonable investment in Byron Murphy and a collection of other guys capable of playing a role despite their own limitations. Pierre has a chance to be one of the shining stars of that team-building philosophy, because the role he’s capable of filling is exactly what Flores is going to ask of him.
The Athletic Football Show with Robert Mays did an episode earlier this offseason where they broke down their favorite “sneaky offseason additions shaping the 2026 NFL season.” They also raved about Pierre’s fit in Flores’ defense, and the opportunity for a good rotational player for the Pittsburgh Steelers to thrive even more than he had in a scheme that really played to his skill set. Watching some of Pierre’s games from 2025, I can see what they were talking about, and why Flores went out of his way for this player.
James Pierre scrapped his way into the Steelers’ defense in 2025 and finally secured a starting spot after Week 10. During that stretch, Pittsburgh began running significantly more Cover 2 looks, more than 20% of the time, and it was in that role that Pierre really shined.
Pierre’s best moments are when he’s playing the flats in Cover 2, sinking underneath, and playing physical ball near the line of scrimmage. Or it’s when he’s playing the inverted Cover 2 looks where he showed real ability to bail into the deep half. Those are all things that he’ll be asked to do a ton in Minnesota. Flores runs those coverages as a shell behind any of his sorcery up front with his blitzing schemes.
The sample size for Pierre as a full-time starter isn’t massive. Still, there’s reason to be optimistic about his physicality, tenacity, and knack for making plays on the football, especially when he may not be asked to be a bona fide full-time starter from the jump in Minnesota.
Instead, Flores may ask him to split time 50/50 with last year’s signing, Isaiah Rodgers. In many ways, though, Pierre almost feels like a response to Rodgers’ biggest bugaboo in 2025, which was tackling and physicality. On the other hand, Pierre may lack some of the top-end speed that Rodgers brings to the table. Still, that’s why he’s a guy available to sign for less than $5 million a year.
James Pierre isn’t going to be a guy who we’re feeling great about lining up across from Amon-Ra St. Brown in man coverage. However, that also isn’t what Flores is going to ask him to do very often. Pierre is going to be that pesky zone defender who keeps being a thorn in the side of opposing offenses and outplays his dollar value the way he did in Pittsburgh. He perfectly fits the role Flores will need him to play. He comes at a bargain price, and he’s going to play with a chip on his shoulder. That’s the perfect recipe for that guy who could be a fan-favorite addition to the team by season’s end, capturing our hearts as a glue guy who solidifies the secondary in a much-needed way.
My buddy, who’s a Steelers fan, was the first to text me about the Pierre signing when it happened: “Man, you guys are gonna love James Pierre. I really wanted him back!” Hopefully, his words ring true for Vikings fans by season’s end. I trust him. But I definitely trust Brian Flores.
