Former Timberwolves scout Trey Schwab died Sunday from complications with a double-lung replacement surgery that saved his life more than 12 years ago. He was 50.

A former special assistant to then-Marquette coach Tom Crean, now the head coach at Indiana, Schwab met former Wolves coach and president of basketball operations Flip Saunders on the basketball staff at the University of Tulsa in the ’80s. Schwab joined him at jobs in the CBA and NBA before Marquette hired Schwab in 2001.

“The Timberwolves today mourn the passing of beloved former scout Trey Schwab,” said Timberwolves majority owner Glen Taylor said in a statement issued Sunday night. “Trey was a wonderful person who had a tremendously positive impact on everyone he came across. He exhibited an incredible love for the game of basketball and a genuine passion for helping others.

“Trey embodied the true spirit of teamwork, hard work and dedication and will be missed dearly by his Timberwolves family and the basketball community as a whole. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Schwab family.”
