REPORT: Vikings Announce Signing LB Noor Davis, Waive QB Wes Lunt

The Vikings have announced that they’ve waived quarterback Wes Lunt and signed linebacker Noor Davis.

The Vikings have been playing with eight linebackers in camp, which means that Eric Wilson has had to play on the second and third-string linebacker units while undrafted rookie linebacker Shaan Washington has sat on the sidelines on the PUP list.

Wes Lunt has underperformed in practices thus far, and the Vikings already have a number of quarterbacks on the roster, even with Teddy Bridgewater waiting in reserve. Davis is related to NFL Hall of Famer Andre Tippett. Davis was a minicamp invite for the Vikings, where he presumably impressed.

This is what the Stanford Daily had to say about Davis’ NFL prospects:

JM: Davis came into Stanford as the Butkus Award winner for best high school linebacker and was a consensus top-100 and top tier four-star recruit, and at 6’4” is big, for a linebacker. With a 4.85 40 time, he doesn’t quite have the speed to be a sideline-to-sideline linebacker but in the right system could stop up the middle. His productivity in college leaves major question marks, with 19, 11 and 32 tackles his past three seasons. He could get invited to a training camp because of potential and size.

SC: Davis never seemed to be able to fully tap into his potential at Stanford, and I don’t see him doing it at the next level due to his modest pro day performance. While he will likely get a call from an NFL team after the draft, I don’t see him making a roster in the fall and he will likely find himself on a practice squad. However, he could become a special teams contributor for a team if he begins to show the potential he demonstrated as a prep athlete and at Stanford at times.

That’s not a glowing review, but we’ll be able to see what a new system does for Davis. His pro day scores were not great, indicating a slow linebacker without much agility and poor explosion scores. Nevertheless, he has the size of a modern run-stuffer at 6’3″ 240 pounds.
