Colin Cowherd Isn't Buying 'Patience' For Jordan Love

A day after the NFL schedule release, Colin Cowherd took to his popular Fox Sport’s program, The Herd, to lay out the case for letting Jordan Love loose early in the season.

“They gotta take the training wheels off of Jordan Love with the Packers. Cause if you look at the schedule folks, for the first five games, they face really bad defenses from last year. I’m not saying all these defenses will be bad but the Bears, the Falcons, the Lions, the Raiders certainly don’t play defense. So this entire landscape for Jordan Love is built for success. Three years of tutoring behind Aaron. Three years of the same system. Three years of the same coach. Good online, running game, and an early schedule that really benefits Jordan Love. This is a really workable schedule. By October 9th against the Raiders we’ll know if he can play. Don’t have to be 5-0, they don’t have to be 4-1, but I’ve got to be see some talent, composure, and it.”

Earlier this week Diana Russini of ESPN leaked a reported the Packers were preaching patience for Love within the organization.

This comes roughly a month after Matt LaFleur shared nearly the same sentiment at the NFL owners meetings.

Earlier in the week Cowherd reacted to Russini’s and was again pushing back on the idea of patience.

“It’s year four. If Diana ussini is finding out about that, she breaks a lot of stories, that’s all I need to know. Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert started early behind terrible offensive lines and both highly productive. The Bengals were a dysfunctional organization. The Chargers, although more talented, have always been dysfunctional. The Packers have no dysfunction, a good offensive line, two very good running backs…one a star, an emerging star wide receiver, they always give their quarterback support, and at least a decent defense. And a winning culture…If you’ve given your kids singing lessons for four years and she or he still sounds like they’re breaking glass, you don’t have Whitney Houston.

By the way, Jordan love has taken 157 snaps. How many did it take you to figure out that Justin Herbert could play? About a dozen. How many did it take you to figure out that Joe Burrow could play? About 15. I can remember Justin Herbert in that game against Kansas City. I think it was the first or second drive. He threw a laser down the field and you were like yep check that box. We’re fine on quarterback.

If you’re preaching patience and we’re in a year four with those running backs, that offensive coach, that offensive line, Christian Watson, and a very good draft I think they’re telling you all you need to know.

It just doesn’t take that long and stop going to Josh Allen. Josh Allen was leaping over people! He was running past them, over them, through them. We all knew Josh Allen had a lot of talent and he had to come out and play early. It’s year four.

I said this before. Years and years ago I believed you had to give a quarterback 2 1/2 to 3 years. But now, with the seven and seven tournaments, the culture has changed for quarterbacks. They take 10,000 snaps by the time they are a sophomore in high school. So I believe for a quarterback, it’s Thanksgiving for year two. At that point you have a meeting with the owner and the GM and the coach. You made a decision. Guy can play. Guy can’t play. But with Jordan Love, he’s been sitting around for three years. I think you make the decision by Thanksgiving. I need eight starts.”

Cowherd’s point is clear and relatively reasonable. Generally it’s pretty obvious pretty early whether or not a quarterback has the makings of a long-term starter. But to combat Cowherd‘s point, Kurt Warner was bagging groceries and playing for the arena football league. Geno Smith got passed around the NFL before having a career year last year. And everybody thought Brock Osweiler, Matt Schaub, and Matt Cassel passed the eye test.

It’s okay to not buy into the patience narrative. But we can also understand that we don’t have to see everything right away. We just need to see glimpses. Glimpsed will go a long way for who the Green Bay Packers are going to be under Jordan Love.
