Second year Packers’ receiver Romeo Doubs is ready to be a leader. “Absolutely.” Doubs replied to Dennis Krause of Spectrum News 1. “I’d be lying if I say I shouldn’t be. And I know outside looking in, everybody expects me to be that leader.”
It appears, according to the full interview with Krause, that the young pass catcher’s leadership style is that of an outspoken supporter. When asked about the transition to Jordan Love, Doubs gave a headline grabbing answer.
“I think Jordan can do it. I think Jordan is a really good quarterback. When you go from Aaron Rodgers to Jordan, Aaron was a really great quarterback, but I believe Jordan can do the same exact thing. So I don’t really see what’s the big difference.”
Doubs may not see a big difference, but his words will likely see a big reaction.
This isn’t the first time the former fourth round pick has spoken on the QB change: “It is going to be a change. No doubt about that. In the end, I’m glad I have Jordan, and I’m truly confident in what he can do.” Doubs said. “Because all of us, we’ve worked with him before. We know what situation we’re in right now.”
The sophomore receiver and his position mates will certainly have a say in whether or not Love can live up to his grandiose statement . As head coach Matt LaFleur has mentioned time and again, the tempered expectations for the offense are as much about the young skill position players as they are the quarterback.
But make no mistake about it, LaFleur is all in on Doubs. “Rome’s done an outstanding job. It’s amazing the jump you see from guys going from Year 1 to Year 2.” Lafleur said. “When he first got here, he started off really strong and I thought he was having an outstanding season, and then unfortunately he got injured vs. Detroit. I think that affected him. It affected all of us. It’s good to see him kind of pick up where he was at, at one time. Very encouraged by his progress and his overall knowledge.”
Like Aaron Jones and Keisean Nixon, Romeo isn’t interested in the rebuild narrative surrounding the team. ”I see a progression. I see it going up. I don’t see the Packers going down. Said Doubs. “I only focus on our room and our team in this organization. This organization is historic, and it’s only winning. That’s all. When you hear Green Bay, it’s no losing, it’s only winning.”
The Aaron Rodgers/Jordan Love saga will be the NFL’s premier storyline heading into the 2023 season. Just as it seemed things were settling down, Rodgers decided last week was a good time to unleash “a my side of the story” tale via Matt Schneidman of the Athletic. Between Rodgers’ petty comments and the chip that’s growing on the shoulder of this young Packers team this season should be a great deal of fun.
