Carmelo Anthony Speaks Out On What Makes Anthony Edwards Different

Real recognize real.

It’s a term often used when a perspective from one person resonates with another who has been in a similar situation.

Carmelo Anthony saw it all during his time in the NBA. Now he’s seeing a different side of Anthony Edwards that has come to be this postseason.

On his “7PM in Brooklyn” podcast, Melo said not everyone has what Edwards has.

It’s a different mentality. Not everybody has that mentality. Not everybody wants that type of action. … I’m guarding Luka. I’m guarding Bron. …If I’m one of them I have to guard one of them. I have to be one of them. …You don’t see people taking that approach. That’s a different mentality.

Melo praised Edwards for going at LeBron James during this series and taking control for Minnesota.

He’s here. He’s figured it out. It’s hard to figure it out at a young age like that. That early in your career, it’s hard to figure it out. … He’s figured out how to go get it.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have taken a commanding 3-1 lead over the Los Angeles Lakers and have a chance to close things out Wednesday night in Los Angeles. Edwards’ ability to take over when he needs to and defer as a playmaker when the Lakers throw different looks at him has helped make all the difference.

Last year, Edwards may have forced the issue and gotten his shot up anyway, trying to play the Superman role. The evolution in his game points towards someone who, this year, in this series, has realized he needs to trust his teammates and read the game as it’s coming to him.

Hearing someone like Melo speak in such high regard for Edwards is a telling example of how most of the game’s greats likely view what Edwards is doing.

The job isn’t done yet. Minnesota still needs one more win to advance, and it will be the hardest one to get. With how Edwards is performing, it’s hard to see the Wolves not getting one of the next three if it comes to that.
