Kyler Murray May Have One Week To Win Over Vikings Fans

The Minnesota Vikings have plenty of intriguing pieces going into the 2026 season, but none of them is more of a mystery than Kyler Murray.

Murray is joining the Vikings after the Arizona Cardinals moved on from him. While he is a former No. 1-overall pick with a dynamic skillset, many fans can’t get over the fact that he smashed Call of Duty so hard that the Cardinals put a study clause in his contract.

Because of that, the question about Kyler Murray isn’t whether he’ll be the answer to Minnesota’s quarterback problems. It’s whether he’ll pan out at all. There isn’t much time to resolve the Murray situation, as evidenced by the Green Bay Packers being listed as the first opponent on their 2026 schedule.

Taking on the Packers immediately feels like a challenging task. But if Murray can pass it with flying colors, it may take just one week for everyone to buy into their new starting quarterback.

Before we go any further, we should lay out the Vikings quarterback situation. Minnesota is still proclaiming that this year’s offseason program is a battle between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy.

It’s wise to keep the door open for a former top-10 pick and the highest-drafted quarterback in franchise history. Still, the Vikings don’t seem to be buying into the final five games of last season when McCarthy played well. They also view Murray as a potential long-term answer, according to a report by SI’s Albert Breer detailing his free-agent visit to Minnesota.

It’s also possible that even if Kevin O’Connell talks enough about outcomes and scenarios, followed by scenarios and outcomes, he may reveal who the starting quarterback is for Week 1.

Since O’Connell took over in 2022, the starting quarterback has rarely taken snaps in the preseason outside of a Sam Darnold test run in 2024 and one series for McCarthy in 2025. If McCarthy is playing full preseason games, it will be a hint that Murray is the starter, and there could be backlash from fans who want to see McCarthy through.

That’s all great, but Murray’s work won’t be done if that happens. Week 1 is small in the grand scheme of things, but things escalated when the Packers were revealed as their opponent. Whether Vikings fans want to admit it or not, they see red when green and yellow come pouring into their town, and ownership has reciprocated that feeling.

Keep in mind that Brad Childress was fired in 2010 after the Packers blew Minnesota out at home. Also, note that this is a franchise that once brought in Brett Favre and considered signing Aaron Rodgers last season. Fans didn’t fully accept Sam Darnold until he shredded Green Bay in a Week 17 meeting in 2024. Meanwhile, McCarthy’s rough outing in the first meeting with the Packers during the 2025 season turned him from Quarterback of the Future to The Next Christian Ponder.

There’s even a segment of Vikings fans who hang a banner over the fact they beat the Packers in Week 18 last season. Sure, going down to troll Kelvin from accounting, who is a proud citizen of Manitowoc, was a lot of fun. But it was also watered down after Green Bay benched all of their starters in anticipation of a playoff game.

Even with a more advantageous schedule on the line, the high school versions of the Vikings and their fans were beaming with a win over the Packers’ C-squad, and it may have been a reason O’Connell kept his job while they fired general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah.

Rent-free rivals aside, Minnesota’s goal should be to beat everyone. But Week 1 against the Packers should be an audition for Kyler Murray to prove he can thrive in O’Connell’s offense. Fortunately for him, some things will be in his favor.

The biggest advantage could come from Micah Parsons‘s status. Parsons tore his ACL last December, and many expected him to be ready for Week 1. But according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the expectation is that they’ll place him on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

That move would keep Parsons out for the first four games. However, for Vikings fans, it would keep him out of one of the biggest games on their schedule. That means Minnesota would be facing a pass rush led by Lukas Van Ness, Brenton Cox Jr., and Barryn Sorrell. Even if 2025 fifth-round draft pick Collin Oliver lives up to his insane “Baby Micah” nickname, it may not happen in Week 1, and it will be unlikely to have the same impact as having a full-grown Parsons on the field.

The matchup with the Packers gets juicier considering Murray’s history. His final years in Arizona were under Jonathan Gannon’s guidance, who didn’t do anything memorable outside of the awkward moments on camera during his three years in the desert. Looking like Pee Wee Herman took up a secondary career as a football coach is bad enough. But having a raging former quarterback motivated to shred your defense may be another factor Green Bay has to deal with.

Then, there is playing in front of the home crowd. Many Vikings fans can’t get over the video games’ obsession or the fact that he only stands at 5’10” with an attitude. But those worries will go out the window the moment he throws his first touchdown pass against the Packers.

A long bomb to Justin Jefferson on a third-and-one will melt all of those worries away, and if he throws multiple touchdowns his way, the TikTok trend of “TOP-FIVE TRADE DESTINATIONS FOR JUSTIN JEFFERSON” will turn into “WHO GON’ STOP ‘EM???”

Contrast that with what could happen if things go the other way. A couple of interceptions and bad decisions could have people calling for McCarthy, even if he was sailing passes toward Wally the Beer Man in the preseason. Having a quarterback who is cosplaying an Under Armor model may be better than one who is trying to figure out how to beat Zombie mode, and it may be the referendum Vikings fans need to figure out if Murray is going to work.

Don’t believe me? Go back to the Vikings’ locker room celebration after Darnold beat the Packers in Minnesota in 2024. Darnold’s teammates hoisted him on their shoulders after beating the Packers while O’Connell stood like a proud father in the corner. At that moment, it wouldn’t have been a shock if the Wilfs offered him a lifetime contract before he lost back-to-back games to the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Rams to close the season.

If Kyler Murray lights up the Packers, Vikings fans will love him like Brian O’Neill loves a double cheeseburger slathered in extra ketchup. If he doesn’t, things could get “extra sloppy” in the offensive lineman’s words, and Murray’s future in Minnesota could become far more complicated.
