The Minnesota Vikings used their final pick to beef up their secondary depth, taking cornerback Jack Tocho from North Carolina State.
Tocho is unusually strong for a cornerback and might provide more in run support than is typical at his position. He’s a great tackler and drives through players much larger than him, allowing him to play the slot as an edge protector and take out screen passes as they develop.
His positioning as a corner is up there with most draftable prospects and understands what leverage gives him. He recognizes routes and route combinations as they develop.
Despite his track background, Tocho doesn’t seem to play to his already disappointing 4.52 speed and knows it—he gives significant cushion to faster receivers and doesn’t stay with them as the play develops. He also has stiffness as a cornerback and demonstrates trouble with in-breaking routes or any quick changes of direction.
It’s not a bad pick, probably, but there were better corners on the board in my eyes, including consensus #189 Channing Stribling from Michigan and consensus #248 Ashton Lampkin from Oklahoma State.
