End of an Era: Minnesota Timberwolves Waive Oft-Injured Nikola Pekovic

After seven seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Nikola Pekovic has been waived by the organization. Over his time with the Wolves, Pekovic averaged 12.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and had a 51.8 percent shooting mark from the field.

After getting drafted 31st in the 2008 draft and spending a pair of seasons on a Greek Club basketball team, he joined the Wolves in 2010. At his peak — the 2013-2014 season — he showed considerable promise, averaging 17.5 points and 8.7 rebounds per game while shooting over 50 percent through an entire season, rivaling the likes of fellow bigs Anthony Davis, Blake Griffin, Dwight Howard and Al Horford. However — leg injuries, particularly the ankle — sidelined him time and time again. Even in his breakout season, he managed to get into just 54 games.

It’s also worth noting that Pekovic only got into 43 games (43 starts) following his 2013-14 breakout, including just 12 in the 2015-16 season and none last season. The Wolves finally cut ties on Tuesday, saving themselves from an $11.6-million cap hit.
